What Really Makes Us Unclean? Clean Hands, Clean Heart

The Pharisees were upset: Jesus' disciples ate without washing their hands the proper way. Jesus answered with a question that still stings: what good is a ritual if the heart is far from God?

Matthew 15:1-20 You hypocrites! How right Isaiah was when he prophesied about you! 8 "These people, says God, honor me with their words, but their heart is really far away from me. 9 It is no use for them to worship me, because they teach human rules as though they were my laws!' " 10 Then Jesus called the crowd to him and said to them, "Listen and understand! 11 It is not what goes into your mouth that makes you ritually unclean; rather, what comes out of it makes you unclean." 12 Then the disciples came to him and said, "Do you know that the Pharisees had their feelings hurt by what you said?" 13 "Every plant which my Father in heaven did not plant will be pulled up," answered Jesus. 14 "Don't worry about them! They are blind leaders of the blind; and when one blind man leads another, both fall into a ditch." 15 Peter spoke up, "Explain this saying to us." 16 Jesus said to them, "You are still no more intelligent than the others. 17 Don't you understand? Anything that goes into your mouth goes into your stomach and then on out of your body. 18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these are the things that make you ritually unclean. 19 For from your heart come the evil ideas which lead you to kill, commit adultery, and do other immoral things; to rob, lie, and slander others. 20 These are the things that make you unclean. But to eat without washing your hands as they say you should - this doesn't make you unclean."

Appearance versus reality

Think of a spotless house where the family never speaks kindly. Or someone who is always first in the pew yet gossips about everyone after Mass. Jesus is not against good customs; he is against letting them replace love.

What comes out of us

He says that what comes out of the mouth shows what is inside the heart. A harsh message sent in anger, a lie told to avoid embarrassment, a rumour passed along: these defile us more than any dirty hands.

Healthy habits for the heart

We wash our hands without thinking, many times a day. What if we paused as often to check our words and thoughts? A short daily examination of conscience works like soap for the heart.

Try this today

Before speaking in anger today, wait five seconds and ask: "Is this true, kind and necessary?"
At night, review the day and name one word you wish you had not said.
Do one hidden good deed that nobody will ever know about.

A short prayer

Lord, create in me a clean heart, and let my words and actions reflect your love. Amen.

പുറമേ ശുദ്ധി പാലിക്കുന്നതിലും പ്രധാനമാണ് ഹൃദയത്തിന്റെ ശുദ്ധി. വായിൽ നിന്നു പുറപ്പെടുന്നതെല്ലാം ഹൃദയത്തിൽ നിന്നാണ് വരുന്നതെന്ന് യേശു പറയുന്നു.

യേശു ജനങ്ങളെ തന്‍റെ അടുത്തു വിളിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞു: നിങ്ങള്‍ കേട്ടു മനസ്‌സിലാക്കുവിന്‍; വായിലേക്കു പ്രവേശിക്കുന്നതല്ല, വായില്‍നിന്നു വരുന്നതാണ് ഒരുവനെ അശുദ്ധനാക്കുന്നത്. അപ്പോള്‍ ശിഷ്യന്‍മാര്‍ അടുത്തുവന്നു പറഞ്ഞു: ഈ വചനം ഫരിസേയര്‍ക്ക് ഇടര്‍ച്ചയുണ്ടാക്കിയെന്ന് നീ അറിയുന്നുവോ? അവന്‍ മറുപടി പറഞ്ഞു: എന്‍റെ സ്വര്‍ഗീയ പിതാവ് നട്ടതല്ലാത്ത ചെടികളൊക്കെയും പിഴുതുമാറ്റപ്പെടും. അവരെ വിട്ടേക്കൂ; അവര്‍ അന്ധരെ നയിക്കുന്ന അന്ധരാണ്. അന്ധന്‍ അന്ധനെ നയിച്ചാല്‍ ഇരുവരും കുഴിയില്‍ വീഴും. ഈ ഉപമ ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്കു വിശദീകരിച്ചു തരണമേ എന്നു പത്രോസ് അപേക്ഷിച്ചു. അവന്‍ ചോദിച്ചു: നിങ്ങള്‍ ഇപ്പോഴും ഗ്രഹണശക്തിയില്ലാത്തവരാണോ? വായില്‍ പ്രവേശിക്കുന്നവ ഉദരത്തിലേക്കുപോകുന്നെന്നും അവിടെനിന്ന് അതു വിസര്‍ജിക്കപ്പെടുന്നെന്നും നിങ്ങള്‍ ഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നില്ലേ? എന്നാല്‍, വായില്‍നിന്നു വരുന്നത് ഹൃദയത്തില്‍ നിന്നാണു പുറപ്പെടുന്നത്. അതു മനുഷ്യനെ അശുദ്ധനാക്കുന്നു. ദുശ്ചിന്തകള്‍, കൊലപാതകം, പരസംഗം, വ്യഭിചാരം, മോഷണം, കള്ളസാക്ഷ്യം, പരദൂഷണം എന്നിവയെല്ലാം ഹൃദയത്തില്‍ നിന്നാണ് പുറപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഇവയാണ് ഒരുവനെ അശുദ്ധനാക്കുന്നത്. കൈകഴുകാതെ ഭക്ഷണം കഴിക്കുന്നത് ആരെയും അശുദ്ധനാക്കുന്നില്ല. കപടനാട്യക്കാരേ, ഏശയ്യാ നിങ്ങളെപ്പറ്റി ശരിയായിത്തന്നെ പ്രവചിച്ചു: ഈ ജനം അധരംകൊണ്ട് എന്നെ ബഹുമാനിക്കുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍, അവരുടെ ഹൃദയം എന്നില്‍നിന്നു വളരെ അകലെയാണ്. അവര്‍ മാനുഷിക നിയമങ്ങള്‍ പ്രമാണങ്ങളായി പഠിപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് വ്യര്‍ഥമായി എന്നെ ആരാധിക്കുന്നു.
