The New Commandment: Love One Another as I Have Loved You

Jesus did not leave his disciples a long rulebook for the night before he died. He left one sentence: "Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." It is short enough to memorise and big enough to take a lifetime.

Love that shows up

After a cyclone or flood, the strongest examples of this commandment are not speeches but volunteers with shovels and tarpaulins, repairing a neighbour's roof before their own. In many parishes, young people spend weekends fixing the homes of people they barely know. That is what "as I have loved you" looks like: love that gets its hands dirty.

The hardest people to love are close by

It is easier to donate to strangers than to forgive a brother who has not spoken to us for years. Jesus' standard begins at the dinner table: the in-law we avoid, the colleague who takes credit, the parent who never says "well done".

A sign the world can read

Jesus says people will know we are his disciples by our love. Not by our badges, our attendance, or our debate skills. A family that is known on its street as kind is preaching louder than any sermon.
