The Truth Will Set You Free: Living Without Hidden Chains

The people listening to Jesus said, "We have never been slaves of anyone." Yet every one of us can name something that has a grip on us: a habit, a fear, a grudge, a secret. Jesus offers a different kind of freedom: "If you hold to my teaching, you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

John 8:31-38 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” 34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Chains we do not call chains

A smartphone that we check forty times an hour, a lie that must be remembered and defended, a resentment we replay at night. These feel like part of ordinary life, but they steer us. Jesus says that sin makes us slaves, quietly.

Truth is not just facts

Truth in the Gospel is not trivia; it is a person to stay with. When we remain in Jesus' word, we begin to see ourselves honestly, without excuses and without despair. That honesty is the first step out of any prison.

A freedom that lasts

A son belongs to the house; a slave does not. Jesus is not only removing chains but giving us a home. Confession, forgiveness and the Eucharist are doors into that house.

Try this today

Name one thing you are 'a slave to' and tell a trusted person or confessor about it.
Spend one week without a particular habit that controls you.
Be honest today in one small situation where a lie would have been easier.

A short prayer

Jesus, set me free from everything that binds me, and keep me in your truth. Amen.

തന്നില്‍ വിശ്വസിച്ചവരോട് യേശു പറഞ്ഞു: എന്‍റെ വചനത്തില്‍ നിലനില്‍ക്കുമെങ്കില്‍ നിങ്ങള്‍ യഥാര്‍ഥത്തില്‍ എന്‍റെ ശിഷ്യരാണ്. നിങ്ങള്‍ സത്യം അറിയുകയും സത്യം നിങ്ങളെ സ്വതന്ത്രരാക്കുകയും ചെയ്യും. അവര്‍ അവനോടു പറഞ്ഞു: ഞങ്ങള്‍ ഒരിക്കലും ആരുടെയും അടിമകളായിരുന്നിട്ടില്ല. പിന്നെ എങ്ങനെയാണ് നിങ്ങള്‍ സ്വതന്ത്രരാക്കപ്പെടും എന്നു നീ പറയുന്നത്? യേശു പ്രതിവചിച്ചു: സത്യം സത്യമായി ഞാന്‍ നിങ്ങളോടു പറയുന്നു, പാപം ചെയ്യുന്നവന്‍ പാപത്തിന്‍റെ അടിമയാണ്. അടിമ എക്കാലവും ഭവനത്തില്‍ വസിക്കുന്നില്ല. പുത്രനാകട്ടെ എക്കാലവും വസിക്കുന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ട് പുത്രന്‍ നിങ്ങളെ സ്വതന്ത്രരാക്കിയാല്‍ നിങ്ങള്‍ യഥാര്‍ഥത്തില്‍ സ്വതന്ത്രരാകും.
