"കർത്താവ് എന്റെ ഇടയനാകുന്നു; എനിക്കു കുറവൊന്നും ഉണ്ടാകയില്ല." ആശുപത്രിയിലെ രാത്രിയിലും ദുഃഖത്തിന്റെ താഴ്‌വരയിലും ഈ വചനം നമുക്കു ആശ്വാസം നൽകുന്നു.

Psalm 23 is often read at hospital bedsides, at weddings and at funerals, because it fits every season of life. In just six verses it moves from green pastures to the valley of the shadow of death to a table prepared in the presence of enemies.

Psalm 23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Rest is not laziness

"He makes me lie down in green pastures." A shepherd knows that sheep can only rest when they feel safe. Many of us cannot sleep because we are carrying everything alone. The psalm invites us to lie down, because someone else is watching.

Through the valley, not around it

The psalmist does not say, "I will never walk through the dark valley." He says, "even though I walk through", and adds, "you are with me." Anyone who has sat through a long night in a hospital waiting room knows that presence matters more than answers.

A table, a cup, a home

The ending is warm: a table, an overflowing cup, goodness and mercy following us all our days. God is not only a guide but a host who welcomes us home.
