Open Your Eyes: The Fields Are Ripe for Harvest

After a long day, the disciples urge Jesus to eat. He answers, "My food is to do the will of him who sent me." Then he points at the fields and says, "Open your eyes and look: they are ripe for harvest." He is not talking about wheat, but about people.

Read the Gospel

John 4:31-38 My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. 35 Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. 36 Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. 37 Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true. 38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”

Seeing what we usually miss

A farmer can tell from a distance that a field is ready. Many of us walk past people every day without seeing them: the new family at the church door, the colleague who has stopped smiling, the neighbour whose lights are always off.

You may reap what others sowed

Jesus says, "Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits." Our faith itself came through grandparents who prayed, teachers who taught the catechism, and missionaries we never met. Gratitude makes us generous workers.

Small work, shared joy

Sower and reaper rejoice together. We do not need to do everything; one invitation, one phone call, one kind word can be the harvest someone else prayed for years.

Try this today

  • Today, greet one person you normally walk past.
  • Thank, by name, three people who passed on the faith to you.
  • Invite someone who seems lonely to Mass, a family meal, or a parish event.

A short prayer

Lord of the harvest, open my eyes to the people around me, and use me to bring them hope. Amen.
