Every parent knows the panic of losing sight of a child in a crowded market, even for a minute. Every other thing is forgotten until the child is found. Jesus tells a story about a shepherd who feels that urgency for a single lost sheep.

Read the Gospel

Luke 15:1-7 Jesus said, 'If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go in search of the one that went astray?' This shows the heart of God, who values every individual soul. His love reaches out even to those who stray, and heaven rejoices when even one sinner repents. Through this parable, Jesus teaches us the divine priority of mercy, restoration, and hope.

The one who matters

To a business, one lost out of a hundred is a rounding error. To the shepherd, it is a name and a face. We may feel like the one who wandered: a family member who stopped going to church, a friend who disappeared during a hard season, ourselves after a mistake.

He carries us home

The shepherd does not scold the sheep or drive it back with a stick; he puts it on his shoulders. Grace is not a lecture but a ride home.

Heaven's party

When the sheep is found, the shepherd calls his friends: "Rejoice with me." Heaven celebrates every return. A good parish welcomes the returning with joy, not suspicion.

Try this today

  • Pray by name for someone who has drifted from faith or family, and reach out with a simple message.
  • If you have wandered, take one step back this week: a prayer, Mass, or confession.
  • When someone returns, welcome them without 'I told you so'.

A short prayer

Good Shepherd, thank you for searching for me. Carry me home, and help me welcome others home too. Amen.
